2009 Cobb's Outstanding Teen
Brianna Godshalk, a sixteen year-old junior at Kell High School, has been named Miss Cobb County’s Outstanding Teen for 2009. An honors student at Kell, Brianna is a member of Beta Club and was granted special permission to take four Advanced Placement courses her junior year. Prior to attending Kell High School, Brianna was home schooled for ten years. After graduating from Kell, her goal is to obtain a Medical Degree and become a successful Pediatric Physician.
A second generation Girl Scout, Brianna is very active promoting her platform, “Bettering Lives through the Girl Scouts of America.” A scouting member for eleven years, she has achieved both the Bronze and Silver Awards and currently is working on the Gold Award, the highest medal given by the Girl Scouts. As Miss Cobb County’s Outstanding Teen, she has partnered with the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta Council addressing the orientation of new recruits, the retention of current scouts and the enrollment of new members. Her leadership positions include being the chair of the “Juliette” committee and key volunteer for the Girl Speakers Bureau.
For the talent portion of the upcoming state contest, Brianna will present a violin solo of “Zigeunerweisen”, which captures the intriguing and fascinating sound of gypsy music in one of Pablo de Sarasate’s most famous compositions. A student of the violin since the age of three, Brianna is a member of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. One of her fondest accomplishments is being selected the concertmistress for the New England Music Camp’s highest symphony in Maine during the summer of 2008. She was proud to earn $3,500 as a violin teacher and nanny to help fund her Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra European Tour to Budapest, Prague and Vienna.
Other interests include performing in musical theatre productions including the touring show for the Atlanta Workshop Players. She is a very good cook, especially desserts. Two favorite pastimes are reading Stephen King novels and drawing in India ink. Her background in dance includes several years training and competing in Irish step dancing. At the age of thirteen, she was nominated for the “National Student Ambassador of the Year” for the People to People Organization, headquartered in Washington, D.C. Her travels as an ambassador carried her to Ireland, England and Wales. This year she was nominated for the National Youth Leadership Forum for Medicine in Boston. Brianna is the daughter of David and Lucia Godshalk, both graduates of Penn State University. David is an engineer and Lucia is a music teacher. Talent does run in the family, as her nineteen-year-old sister Katja, is an accomplished ballerina with the North Carolina Dance Theatre in Charlotte.

For the second year in a row, the state teen competition will be staged in conjunction with the Miss Georgia Pageant at the River Center in Columbus, June 24-27. Thirty-one young ladies will vie to become Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen 2009 and move on to compete for Miss America’s Outstanding Teen in Orlando, Aug. 11-15. Brianna fits the definition of “Outstanding,” perfectly, as she represents the best of the best for 2009.
